EP_23_09 (Energy & Power Vol 23 Issue 9 October 16, 2025 Anniversary Issue)

The level of development of a country or nation can be understood through the amount of energy consumption of that country or nation. The amount of energy consumption per capita in the developing world is much lower than in the developed world.

- Dr. Sharif Ashrafuzzaman

Bangladesh's Place In A Superpower-Driven Market

For example, the average annual per capita electricity consumption in Asia and Africa is 486KW and 411 kW, respectively, while the average annual per capita electricity consumption in North America is 9332KW. The same ratio is applicable to the use of fossil fuels, especially oil and gas. According to the above calculation, the amount of energy consumption in the developed world is almost double that of the countries of Asia and Africa, and the difference between the developed world and the African countries is more than double. This difference in oil and gas consumption indicates that the need for energy, especially the demand for oil and gas, is much higher in the developing world. Due to this energy demand, the need and shortage of oil and gas in the energy sector are increasing day by day, compared to the developed world, especially in Asia.
