A first look at American Airlines' new premium experience

- CHRIS SLOAN

Grand Premiere

THIS WASN'T JUST a first flight—it was a strategic move in the intensifying battle for premium dominance at Chicago O'Hare. American Airlines debuted its new 787-9 Dreamliner with Flagship Suites on a domestic leg before sending the aircraft onward to its transatlantic destination: London Heathrow.

This aircraft is the first of 30 expected to feature American's new premium-heavy configuration. The cabin will also debut on retrofitted 777-300ERs (replacing First class) and the upcoming A321XLR. American plans to deploy the new product on high-yield international routes such as Philadelphia-London, Dallas-Auckland and Dallas-Brisbane.

Check-In

I checked in via the American Airlines app and, traveling light, skipped Flagship Check-In despite having Executive Platinum status. TSA PreCheck was quick, even amid O'Hare's morning rush. After security, I visited American's Admirals Club above Gate H6.

Though not yet refreshed to the newer standards seen at DCA or PHL, it offered a respectable breakfast spread.

Access to the Flagship Lounge below the Admirals Club is limited to long-haul international Flagship Business or Concierge Key passengers. No Flagship First dining is available at O'Hare.

imageBoarding

Gate K19 had a modest inaugural setup—balloons, a poster and brief remarks—but little fanfare otherwise. Boarding followed American's updated procedure: Concierge Key, then Flagship Suite passengers, followed by Group 1. I boarded through Door 2L and turned right into the forward Business class cabin.
