INDIANS HAVE LONG BEEN generous givers.

- KIRAN KARNIK

Growing Generosity: Philanthropic Power?

Much of this is traditionally directed toward family, especially during weddings, when even distant relatives expect appropriate gifts, regardless of the giver's financial status. Unfortunately, dowry, a “gift” given by the bride's family, remains an entrenched tradition.

Religious giving is another significant form of philanthropy: food for the poor, dakshina at temples, payments to priests, and contributions to temple hundis. Major temples collect vast sums, sometimes as bundles of cash given by wealthy entrepreneurs seeking divine absolution for business transgressionsakin to a spiritual bribe. This often supplements, or replaces, a dip in the Ganges to wash away sins.
