Renunciation: A Distinguished Characteristic of the Sanatana Dharma
BUSINESS ECONOMICS
|June 01 - 30, 2026
In eternal values, the diverse and distinguished characteristics of the Sanatana Dharma, renunciation, like faith (Aastha/Shraddha), has remained a distinctive feature, occasionally even more influential than Aastha.
Especially, from a practical viewpoint, renunciation is regarded as an excellent and exemplary human virtue. Although it is a broad concept, both material and spiritual aspects are associated with it. Its scope is also very broad. Along with man, the entire animal kingdom is within its ambit. The concept of renunciation even goes further than this. However, primarily unselfish concern, unselfishness, generosity and service from a materialistic angle, while overcoming ego (negative inclination, considering others inferior and oneself superior), desires (that is to say unnecessary desires), hatred, material pleasures (that fuel self-hurtful cravings), affection (that causes discontent in life), longing (that hinders the path of public welfare), selfishness (that creates enmity and disrupts the pathway to peace and harmony), etc., from a spiritual viewpoint are included within it.
Especially, in the Vedas, in addition to courage, and the discharge of responsibilities, treating all fellow beings with equality (“Mitrasyaaham Chakshushaa Sarvaanii Bhuutaani Samiikshe/Mitrasya Chakshushaa Samiikshaamahe//”, the Yajurveda, 36:18) and making efforts for the greater welfare by overcoming all attachments, are considered practical facets associated with renunciation.
