800 sailors for 40th ARC

The 40th edition of the ARC transatlantic rally set off on 24 November, with 820 sailors on 145 yachts ranging from 3481ft making the passage to St Lucia in the Caribbean.

Three weeks previously the World Cruising Club-run ARC+ also left Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with a further 56 boats and 400 crew, sailing the transatlantic via Mindelo in the Cape Verde islands and then on to Grenada.

As ever, the fleets were wildly diverse.
