OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

Although for many countries the Trump tariffs are a negative thing, they have actually given the UK marine industry a fantastic opportunity. The retaliatory tariffs these countries have put in place means many products which are normally imported from the USA are now untenable due to the fact that there is no margin left for the importer.

As a UK supplier of high performance marine cleaning and care products, we at August Race have benefited from this by stepping in and taking business from rival US brands that many countries are now charging vast amounts in tax to import. We looked at which countries had been most affected by Trump's tariff, including Canada, and last week signed a distribution agreement with one of Canada's biggest marine equipment distributors, Maritime Marine Supply.

Of course, I am partly doing this to promote my own brand, however I do think that the Trump tariffs are actually one of the most positive things that have happened to the UK post Brexit, given that we were only issued with a 10% tax. Peter Wallbank (Technical Director, August Race Worldwide)

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens when the 90-day reprieve is over for the rest of the world but if the tariff wars kick off again, there could well be an opportunity for British exporters to take advantage of the chaos. Hugo
