They dominated the living rooms of many a hip 1970s dwelling: squat, horizontal monoliths with radio, cassette and record player united in a single plastic form. And their abilities were rather varied.

Pricier models were decked out in brushed aluminium and real wood veneer, and some had advanced features, such as direct-drive turntables and FM radio presets. However, hi-fi aficionados were suspicious of any ‘all in one’ music solution, instead favouring hi-fi separates. These individual boxes promised to fulfil a single sonic duty very well, whereas a music centre was seen as a jack of all trades but a master of none.
