how to...TAKE KIDS ON TOUR

Motorhoming is, quite simply, great for children. The unique mixture of home-from-home comforts inside the vehicle and the freedom to entertain themselves in the biggest of playgrounds, with a new friend or two, is a foolproof recipe for a happy child.

Follow these tips, shared by those in the know, to achieve a holiday filled with discovery, fun and quality family time. Tantrums not included!

Keep a stock of toys, books and games that stay in the motorhome, then they'll feel like new again each time you go away.

Download a Geocaching app on your smartphone. It's well worth it, no matter where you are in the world; it's a brilliant exercise for kids and challenging, too.

Always choose a campsite with a playground and ask for a pitch that's close to it. Then the youngsters won't have far to wander and you can keep a close eye on them when they are out and about having fun.

Pack a scrapbook and a selection of stickers, along with some glue, scissors and so on. Each day, set aside a few minutes to write about everything that they have seen and done.

Paste in picture postcards, tour guides, flowers and more, and leave some spaces for your own photos.

It fills time between tea and bedtime, and when they go back to school, they will have a very special project to show their teacher and classmates.

When the children are very little, take a large playpen with you, to keep them entertained while you are setting up the motorhome. A ball and a Frisbee provide lots of fun, while plenty of walks and bike rides will leave them tired out by the evening.

Kids love to feel part of the team, so let them help with fun chores when you're preparing the vehicle. Encourage them to help with setting up the awning, fetching water, doing the washing-up and taking the rubbish to the bins, to earn pocket money. Then you can visit a local charity shop during your tour and let them spend their earnings on some books and toys.
