Semiconductors and Sovereignty: Why India's Tech Future Hinges on Chips
EM - Efficient Manufacturing
|Efficient Manufacturing - May 2025
India is accelerating semiconductor manufacturing to secure digital independence and power its $5 trillion economy vision. This move positions the nation as a key player in the global tech landscape.
-
The international semiconductor sector is the building block of today's digital economy, energising everything from smartphones and electric cars to sophisticated defence systems and AI platforms. As India drives ahead in digitalisation and industrial modernisation, the strategic significance of domestic chip and semiconductor manufacturing has never been more important. With supply chain breakdowns laying bare the weaknesses of global dependence, India is now making proactive moves to localise semiconductor manufacturing and become a vital participant in the global value chain.
Why Semiconductors Matter
Semiconductors form the core of all electronic gadgets. These mini-chips provide computing, processing of data, communications, and automation in all industries like health care, automotive, aviation, telecommunication, and consumer products. With growth in new age technologies such as 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and electric mobility, high-performance, powerefficient chips demand is growing sky-high.
Even though it is a global IT hub, India imports almost all of its semiconductor needs. This dependency has strategic risks, particularly with escalating geopolitical tensions and growing chip-exporting countries’ export curbs. Developing local semiconductor strengths is therefore not only an issue of economic prospect, but also of national security and digital sovereignty.
