Innovation through indigenisation: Materials science is ushering in the future of aerospace and defence

In the wake of the pandemic, there has been a fresh look at supply chain strategies across verticals. The focus is now on building more resilient and sustainable supply chains that are shielded from global volatility. Aerospace and defence are two areas in which this has become critically important.

The Government of India took a big step in this direction when it issued its first Positive Indigenisation List, a list of items that Indian armed forces can only purchase from domestic manufacturers. The focus was on import substitution for major systems, platforms, weapon systems, sensors, and munitions to bolster India's defence capabilities and promote self-reliance in the defence sector.

imageMaterials science plays a critical role in the aerospace and defence industries, which puts it at the centre of these indigenisation efforts. This means developing new materials that enhance performance, safety, and sustainability. From advanced composites and nanomaterials to additive manufacturing, the latest developments in materials science are delivering solutions that enhance durability, reduce weight, and improve stealth capabilities revolutionising operational performance. These advancements offer economic benefits, as domestically sourced and manufactured materials streamline production costs and secure supply chains, while supporting critical sustainability goals.
