Among these, Directed Energy Deposition (DED) AM involves the precise deposition of material, typically metal powder or wire, using a focused energy source such as a laser or electron beam.

In comparison to Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) processes like Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and Electron Beam Melting (EBM), DED offers distinct advantages in terms of scalability, material versatility, and the ability to repair and modify existing components. Its ability to deposit material on large-scale structures with precision makes it ideal for applications requiring the fabrication of large, complex parts, such as aerospace components and tooling for heavy machinery.
