Alfa Romeo's smallest SUV, the Tonale, proves less flavorful than its brand-mates.
2024 ALFA ROMEO TONALE
The Alfa Romeo Tonale makes a good first impression. Its styling oozes italianità, and its cabin is a tasty mix of old-school dials and clever Uconnect 5 tech. But summon the 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine and hit the throttle, and sober reality sets in. This is not a junior version of the vivacious, sharp-driving Stelvio.
The Tonale is related to the Dodge Hornet and the Jeep Compass (welcome to the world of Stellantis) but offered only as a plug-in hybrid. A 180-hp turbo four and two electric motors combine for 285 horsepower and 347 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive is standard, with the rear wheels powered solely by a 121-hp motor. A 14.8-kWh battery can cover a claimed 33 miles at up to 84 mph.
