India's vast railway network plays an indispensable role in the country's social and economic fabric. However, this colossal system faces persistent challenges related to safety, capacity, and an urgent need for modernisation

Despite a notable decline in train accidents over the past two decades, recent incidents underscore the ongoing imperative for enhanced safety measures. The good news first: Railway accidents in India have been on a steep decline since the turn of the millennium. In the period between 2001 and 2024, yearly incidents have fallen by about 90 per cent. This is in part thanks to the Indian government making a commitment to bolstering railway safety and modernising its infrastructure. Significant budgetary allocations and key initiatives signal this intent.
