Designer Ellen Van Dusen and her siblings update a hand-hewn cabin into a pattern-happy family getaway
When designer Ellen Van Dusen renovated her Brooklyn town house in 2018, she didn't have to look far to find a couple of trustworthy tenants: her brothers, Dave and Henry.
“We borrow spices from each other all the time,” says the founder of home goods line Dusen Dusen. So when she set out to buy a country house, the solution came easily. Why not make it a family affair?
All three fell for a funky Sullivan County cabin, hand-built over decades by the postwar artist and textile designer Anthony Ballatore, whose nature-inspired fabrics for Jack Lenor Larsen can be found in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt. Ballatore felt like a kindred soul for Ellen, herself known for lighthearted patterns. “We all immediately knew it was the one,” she says of the rambling cedar-clad structure, which radiated creative energy. Ballatore even carved smiley faces into some tree stumps.

Lights Fantastic
Lighting sculptor Stephen White constructed more than 2,000 works over his six-decade career, at least one a staggering 18 feet tall, yet his meticulous scrapbooks contain scant evidence of public recognition. A few newspaper clippings from Hawaii and the West Coast sit next to a single national magazine cover, nearly half a century old the logo obscuring White's (uncredited) design

CUTTING A RUG
Even during Sweden's famously long and bitter-cold winter, the dining room at Beata Heuman’s 18th-century family farmhouse bursts with life thanks to the hand-painted mural of tulips, lilies, dahlias, and fruit trees—all a nod to flora on the property grounds, much of it planted by her mom. Now, the AD100 designer has teamed up with the British wall covering brand de Gournay to bring that tableau (ever so slightly tweaked) into production. Heuman says of the collaboration, which also includes Delft Folly, her riff on the classic Dutch blue-and-white tiles. degournay.com
