Veneers are taking giant strides as they look beyond floors to be used in wall panels, cabinetry, furniture and even ceiling applications.

THE VERSATILITY OF VENEERS

Veneers are more than just a surface material; they embody craftsmanship and sustainability. As consumer awareness about environmental impact grows, the demand for eco-friendly materials continues to rise.

VENEER WISE

Veneer flooring refers to a type of engineered wood flooring that consists of a thin layer of real hardwood on top of a core material, which is often plywood or high-density fibreboard (HDF). Veneers are thin slices of high-quality wood adhered to core panels, allowing for diverse aesthetics without sacrificing durability. Recent innovations in wood veneers, particularly in sourcing and technology, have enabled architects to incorporate a wider array of exotic species. Aparna Kaushik, Founder & Architect, Aparna Kaushik Design Group, says, “Newer veneers made of several materials, such as stone, wood, metal, bamboo, even paper are available in the market. The use of dyed veneers and unique grain patterns allows for innovative design elements that add personality to spaces. Their aesthetic flexibility allows for intricate and all types of design solutions which could be impractical with solid wood. Utilising bigger veneer sheets reduces seams, resulting in a more cohesive look that’s perfect for contemporary spaces.”

MUSING MUSEUMS

A few months back, when I was in Budapest, I walked into a building that left me awestruck. The inquisitive me went on to explore, and I discovered that it was a museum with pixels on the exterior and that the curved structure of the building dipped underground to form the interiors, even as the garden I was walking on was the green roof of the building that interjected at street level! Woah! I quickly took some pictures and went on to research this building, and the more I read about it, the more I fell in love with it. And then of course I had to share it with you all!
