As the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, many of us make promises to ourselves: eat healthier, exercise more, get organised, and embrace a more natural lifestyle, but what about the birds and animals in our care? Just as we Strive to improve our own wellbeing in the year ahead, don’t our poultry, pigs, goats, sheep and cattle deserve the same commitment to better health, nutrition, and quality of life?

New Year, New Goals: 12 Nutritional Resolutions for Your Smallholding in 2026

Whether as a keeper you are looking for wholesome eggs, milk, grazing management or breeding. The Organic Feed Company has created and shared twelve resolutions that mirror the most popular human New Year's goals, adapted specifically for the nutritional and welfare needs of your livestock. They believe these practical, achievable resolutions, will help you build healthier habits for both you and those in your care throughout 2026.

1. EAT HEALTHIER — WHOLESOME NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Just as we resolve to cut out processed foods and eat more wholesome meals, the New Year is the perfect time to evaluate whether your animals are receiving quality nutrition.

For hens, a quality layers feed provides the essential balance of protein, vitamins, and minerals that supports not just egg production, but overall health, feather quality, and immune function. During the winter months when natural foraging is limited, a complete feed containing alfalfa becomes even more critical. Pigs, particularly the popular Kunekune and other traditional breeds, benefit enormously from feeds that account for their growth stage. Whether you are rearing pigs for pets or maintaining breeding stock, appropriate nutrition ensures they receive adequate protein for muscle development and all the micronutrients they need without the excess calories that lead to obesity and associated health problems. For example, for breeding sows, Organic Sow & Weaner Feed provides a good all-round feed that supports both gestation and lactation, whilst Organic Pig Grower/Finisher allows for natural, unforced growth rates for pigs from seven to eight weeks until finish.

Dealing with bullying behaviours in chickens

We love the idyllic idea of flocks of free ranging chickens, who live peacefully amongst each other and with us. What happens when this is not possible due to legal housing restrictions for poultry or practical reasons due to predators? Your chickens might start to bully each other. Fiona and Hugh Osborne look at the options to deal with bullying.
