End of life care - the final act of love
The Country Smallholder
|May 2025
Matt Huggins considers the importance of saying a compassionate goodbye to your goat
-
Here at Buttercups we are privileged to care for goats through every stage of life, from young to old. It is our duty and responsibility to accommodate each stage as best we can, and end of life care is just as important as any other.
DEFINING AND RECOGNISING
Whilst this may seem obvious, it is not simply a question of old age. Rather it refers to any individual who's condition is not going to improve and will ultimately lead to their passing. This can be due to a range of factors, including disease, organ failure and simple time, with common tells including chronic loss of appetite, mobility or body condition, and long-term change in character. Your vet will be able to confirm this, but if you know your animal well, you will see the signs. However, the term does not necessarily mean an imminent death, and you could still be caring for the goat in this stage for a while.
