I TOOK THIS PHOTO OF A GREEN HERMIT outside a restaurant in Costa Rica where we stopped for lunch with a group of other photographers. This was the first green hermit I ever saw, and I liked the gracefulness of its approach to the flower.

I'VE DREAMED OF SEEING A SHOEBILL since I was a 10-year-old watching a David Attenborough-narrated documentary on these prehistoric-looking creatures. While on a trip to Uganda, I took some adventurous boat rides and pushed through thick vegetation to finally find these birds. And not only did this shoebill give me a show of fishing and flying, it also landed just a few meters away from me, along with a second shoebill. They are very territorial so seeing them together is not a common sight. It was then that I realized how special this journey was. I was so excited and emotional that I started tearing up. I was about to start crying, but then my guide noticed and asked me if I was OK. That was a day I will never forget.
