Technology cannot replace people in animal welfare
Horse & Hound
|September 07, 2023
Tech has a part to play in looking after horses and other animals but it must be meaningful, and human input is key
“NO amount of technology can replace good people,” was a strong message from a debate on tech’s role in animal welfare.
Experts debated the subject: “Technology is challenging the paradigm of animal welfare” during the 2023 Animal Welfare Foundation forum.
Vet Jonathan Statham, chair of Animal Health and Welfare Board for England, said how we use technology in relation to animal welfare is not a new question, but that it is as relevant today as ever.
“I would argue it doesn’t have to be that we choose between technology and human values and observational inputs,” said Professor Statham. “I think it’s essential we have the human factor, and combine the facets in trying to achieve a balance.”
