Buddy Life
|July - September 2023
Dr. R. Selvakkumar shares an insight into types, causes, signs and handling of the problem.
-
Invading a dog's personal space, approaching in a confined space, behaving unfamiliar in front of the dogs, all lead to reaction.
Aggression in dogs may be defined as any threat or harmful behaviour directed toward another individual that may be of the same group or others. Dogs exhibit aggression by changes in body posture, facial expressions, vocalization (growling, barking, snarling) and biting. Aggression can be a normal form of communication in dogs but directed toward a person or animal it may become problematic and need intervention. Even though fear and anxiety are considered the prime cause for aggression in dogs, many factors are listed under the aggression stimulating agents. The causative factors for aggression in dogs are classified as below.
Fear Related Aggression
Aggression due to fear in dogs is a form of self-defence and may be expressed toward people, other animals or even objects. This is exhibited when they feel unsafe. Invading a dog's personal space, approaching the dog in a confined space, behaving unfamiliar in front of the dogs, fast, sudden or unexpected movements and sounds and introduction of dogs into a place which makes them scared are some causative factors for fear related aggression.
Possessive Aggression
Possessive aggression is aggression that is directed toward humans or other animals that approach the dog when it is in possession of something that is highly desirable, such as a favourite food, treat, toy or its young ones. Possessive aggression is sometimes referred to as food aggression and resource guarding. Providing more valuable treats and toys can divert the aggressive dog from its possession and make him calm.
