Diederik Cuckoo breeding strategy

It was an early October morning in a forest-edge garden just west of East London in the Eastern Cape. The strident, repetitive call of the first Diederik Cuckoo of the season rang out from the top of a tree and the silent moments in between were filled with the noisy chatter of a nearby Village Weaver colony. The busy weavers were three days into skilfully constructing their first practice nests of the summer and, as if on cue, the first, very interested cuckoos had arrived.
