GP star Denise Roberts: ‘I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY STILL RECOGNISE ME'

She became a household name starring in the hit ABC drama more than 30 years ago, but these days the Aussie actress is creating a new generation of stars

It’s been almost a quarter of a century since Denise Roberts’ character Julie Winters sailed out of ABC-TV’s pioneering medical series GP on a cruise ship, signalling a new life for the loud and much-loved receptionist.

Her departure was a huge loss to GP, which became a national obsession during its eight-year run from 1989 to 1996. Each week, millions of viewers tuned in to see what new dramas and medical emergencies were happening at the Ross Street clinic.

“I desperately wanted them to kill me off,” laughs Denise, who was refused her dream exit because of fears the country might go into mourning if the blonde receptionist with the big hair and even bigger voice met a traumatic end.
