Fencing has been part of the modern Olympics since the very first Games at Athens in 1896, but the women’s foil event only debuted at Paris in 1924.
While swordplay has existed for thousands of years, it developed into a sport that is known today as fencing only in the 15th century. Both Germany and Italy claim the sport originated in their country. The first notable association, Marxbruder of Frankfurt, was formed in 1478 by German fencing masters.

Forms and scoring There are three forms of the sport: foil, epée and sabre.
The foil is the most common apparatus used by fencing practitioners. The lightweight weapon is used by beginners and is very flexible. The length of the blade, which has a handle and cup that protects the hand, is 90 cm. Fencers can only target the opponent’s torso and double touches are not allowed.
