Still In Touch With...Fees Moloi (Part 2)

|2 October 2019
Fees Moloi, who joined Kaizer Chiefs from Manning Rangers in 2000, says, “Of all the teams I played for, that was the most professional. That one I don’t doubt! There, they valued everyone, from the players right down to the cleaners, gardeners and security guards.” However, things did not go his way at Amakhosi and the well-travelled former striker concedes the timing of his move was not the best and that, with results not going his way and pressure at an all-time high, coach Muhsin Ertugral opted to use the players who had been in the set-up for longer. This is Part Two of Moloi’s Still In Touch…
Fees, let’s continue from where we left off last week. You must have had more interesting experiences during a football career that took you to nine clubs!
Yeah, yeah. One of those interesting experiences was the use of muti, which was common practice at some teams in those days. Well, I, for one, had a problem partaking of such rituals, which led to me being singled out as a sell-out by colleagues, coaches and club management. My belief was, if I pray, I pray to who? If I use that mixture that the club uses, who is in charge of the mixture? Because we used the mixture and then still went onto the field and trained. So why couldn’t we just go and play? People who liked it would use it, but nna (me), shame, I think maybe it was because of my background that I didn’t use it. We are still Christians at home, so I don’t believe in that, but teams believed in it when I was still playing. However, there is one coach that I can single out, out of all the coaches that coached me, who stood firm and said, “I don’t want to see this. If I see this or hear that any of my players had been using muti, two ways – either that player goes or I go.” That was Gordon Igesund. You come to Gordon and talk about muti, you go or he leaves immediately – finish and klaar! I was with him at Manning Rangers and when I went to Santos, he was already there. With him, no muti.
Hmmm…

Petersen's rebirth at Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs are keeping clean sheets for fun this season. After a paltry seven shutouts in 28 league matches last term, few could have foreseen the sort of defensive strength shown this season. Whilst tactics have played a part, as has the improved form of several defenders, one can't overlook goalkeeper Brandon Petersen's dramatic improvement. After 15 league fixtures, he has 11 clean sheets to his name and could potentially help Chiefs beat the 19 clean sheets kept in the 2014/15 season under Stuart Baxter. What do the stats tell us about Petersen's improved form? Should the goalkeeper coach Ilyes Mzoughi be getting more credit? And have the performances of \"Beeza\" ended the Chiefs careers of Fiacre Ntwari and Bruce Bvuma? Soccer Laduma investigates.

Still In Touch With... HUMPHREY MLWANE
Moroka Swallows dominated South African football in the late 1980s and early 1990s when they were financed by the late Louis Luyt, winning the 1989 Bob Save Super Bowl and other finals. But when Luyt left the club, players like Gregor Wille, Eric Ramasike, and Marcus Mphafudi also left. The club's financial struggles created opportunities for young players like Humphrey Mlwane, who joined from Daveyton Highlanders in 1993. Mlwane anchored the Swallows midfield until joining Kaizer Chiefs in 1996, ahead of the newly-launched Premier Soccer League. The midfielder was one of coach Paul Dolezar's favourite players and helped Amakhosi win the Rothmans Cup as well as the Bob Save Super Bowl. But in 2000, he was deemed surplus to requirements and joined Mother City before winding down his career at clubs like Umtata Bucks, African Wanderers and Avendale Athletico, before retiring at Winners Park in 2005.

It was always my plan to go overseas
Historically, South Africa has had players who have taken Belgian football by storm, from former Bafana Bafana defender Aaron Mokoena making his mark at Germinal Beerschot and KRC Genk, to Lance Davids at Lierse S.K., the late Anele Ngcongca at KRC Genk and Percy Tau at R.S.C. Anderlecht.

As Sukazi prepares to finalise the deal abroad, he opens up about interest from Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in the talented attacker, and shares insights into how TS Galaxy continues to thrive financially in the Betway Premiership. The interview also captures the emotion of the moment, with Puso and his father Maxwell Dithejane expressing pride and excitement ahead of the young star’s American journey.
