The East Side Dream Run
NZ SURFING MAGAZINE
|Issue 186
It’s no secret that the East Coast of our country aside from the zones of Gisborne and Dunedin can be fickle beasts, with long flat swells and short period wind swells usually being the staple diet.
-
Yet the East has the allure of its own, that when it turns on, it can provide dream like waves, the kind you drew or still draw in your school text book as a grommet. While the West Coastline contours are relatively straight, with a few bumps here and there, the East side on the other hand holds a myriad of twists, juts, bumps and thrusts in the landscape that create all these hidden gems, mythical sanctuaries, that lie dormant awaiting the day when they will have their time to shine! Top to bottom waves in crystal clear blue water thumping upon white sand bottomed beaches are the visions one has when heading east. And for those that have scored these memorable yet rare days, they hold a special place in a kiwi surfers heart, so when rumours begin to swirl of a possible awakening, the disciples come from afar and wide. Those that are committed know if you blink you’ll miss! It’s not uncommon for an epic session to only last several hours, and those that last several days and penned into surf diaries as epic events. But in February of 2019 in what could almost be touted as the most accurate long range forecast to ever hit the interweb. If these numbers were in fact true, the East Coast was about to undergo one of its all-time runs, the kind you only ever heard about in campfire stories from the gurus 1970s yarns.
