In the midst of an enticing India-Australia one day international series and the wildly swinging fortunes of the South African cricket team, was lost the small headline about the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC)’s cricket committee giving their thumbs down to the International Cricket Council (ICC) proposal to reduce the duration of Test matches. But will the ICC accede?

It would seem that public pressure and duress from leading world players, speaking out after it was revealed that the ICC was contemplating reducing the Test cricket matches from five days to four, sparked the MCC to reflect and also, respond in a manner that would appease both, the cricketers and the fans.

The ICC had stated that it was pondering seriously the idea of curtailing Test matches to four days from the next cycle beginning 2023 as a way to pay heed to the statistics which have suggested more matches ending within four days and also, of freeing up days in the cricket calendar.
