Breaking The Barrier: The World's Deepest Dive

David Strike shared a brilliant presentation about the history of deep diving and how Lt. George Wookey achieved the world’s deepest dive in 1956 using a surface-supplied rebreather.

The early experimental dives started with the use of helium gas after the effects were studied on animals and was deemed a suitable replacement for nitrogen to combat nitrogen narcosis. A lot of research went into reducing the risks of diving to an acceptable and manageable level. There was a need to also understand the physics of diving and the physiology of a diver to prevent decompression sickness.
