CALL IT the result of the agro-climatic conditions of the hilly Kandhamal district in Odisha, or the ages of careful nurturing by tribal communities, but the region’s native turmeric variety remains unmatched in its golden hue and intense aroma. Also famous for its healing properties, the Kandhamal turmeric in 2019 was accorded the Geographic Indication (GI) tag, which provides legal protection against unauthorized use of its name and thereby boosts popularity and exports of the original variety.
