Falcons give code-hopper Burrell new lease of life

LUTHER BURRELL has put the dark times behind him and is looking forward to an exciting new chapter in his career after finally getting back on a rugby field.

Yesterday the 32-year-old former England centre made his first appearance of any description since the end of February in Newcastle’s pre-season friendly against Ealing Trailfinders.

Before that, his last competitive action was for Warrington Wolves against Leeds Rhinos in Rugby League.

“It’s been a great few weeks with Newcastle and it’s great just to be back in Rugby Union, with a good bunch of lads and a good coaching staff,” Burrell said.

“I’ve been given a new opportunity and a new lease of life and I don’t want to leave any stone unturned.

“Dean (Richards) is a top bloke, he is going to get the best out of this group of players, I’ve no doubt about that.”

Nearly 18 months have passed since Burrell scored with his first touch in Northampton’s Premiership semi-final defeat to Exeter Chiefs in May 2019.

And while the Yorkshire-born player admits he’s got some rust to shake off, he’s ready physically and mentally for the challenge.

“What I’ll take from Rugby League is a level of fitness and mindset that I’ll be able to apply to Rugby Union,” he said.

“I am in unbelievable shape at the moment. I went from 112kgs to 100kgs at Warrington although I’ve put a bit back on since then.

“I had to really change my body shape and fitness levels and I learnt things about myself and took myself to dark places, and I learnt how strong my mind is.
