Spectacular goals and rock-solid defending on their own pitch have been the key to the Magpies putting a smile back on the faces of their loyal supporters after a desperate summer.

Full-back Richard Brindley’s goal of the season contender was followed by a resilient effort that blunted the National League’s leading scorers.

It’s now five clean sheets on the bounce at Meadow Lane for Notts and Johnson was honest in his assessment.

“We were the second best team – not by a long way, but we needed more quality,” the Torquay manager said.

“Notts County looked a very experienced team, which they are, and the crowd got behind them after the early goal.
