“ Growing up, ‘different’ was an adjective constantly used to describe me. Every time I stepped into a room, I would see confused faces and hear obnoxious whispers of people wondering about my race. That’s completely understandable, of course; being biracial isn’t something I’d start with when meeting someone for the first time. There are some that would boldly ask, ‘What are you?’ or ‘Why is your hair curly?’. In the beginning, I would start explaining my family’s heritage but then it just became too much.

At 14, I heard of this new treatment that promises to straighten the hair and reduce frizz without me having to wake up two hours earlier to work on my locks. This led to an unhealthy obsession with hair rebonding treatments, which I did every six months for a good six years! After chancing upon my late grandmother’s photo and seeing how she had gorgeous long and curly locks, I thought that I shouldn’t shy away from flaunting who I really am. And
