Decoding Gaganyaan

May month marked the end of elections in India and Narendra Modi took oath as the Prime Minister for the second time. Rewinding to last year on 15th August 2018, our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi announced that an Indian astronaut would go into space by 2022. Well, it will be a big leap forward for us and the preparations for the mission have already begun in full fledge.

WHAT IS GAGANYAAN MISSION?

Gaganyaan is India’s first Human Space Flight Programme to be launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) by 2022. ISRO has been planning the Gaganyaan mission since 2004. ISRO along with the Indian Air Force (IAF) will feature a three-member crew that will power the Gaganyaan mission. The three-member crew will be sent 300 to 400 kilometres away in the low earth orbit for 5 to 7 days. For the Gaganyaan mission, the Centre has allotted a budget of 10,000 crores.
