The Fifth Amendment

LEIGH Griffiths’ late strike in the 5-0 demolition of FC Astana last week may have been snatched from him by UEFA and awarded to Igor Shitov, but it couldn’t take the shine of his sparkling showing on the elite level of European competition.

The striker may not feel he has anything to prove about his ability to thrive on the highest stage but he is offering plenty of evidence in any event.

Always a hugely prolific marksman at domestic level, last season he bagged five goals in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers and in June he sensationally broke his Scotland duck with his two fabulous free-kicks in the 2-2 draw against England.

Along with the goals, Griffiths now looks to have all the tools be a top-class forward. His intelligent link-up play was to the fore against Astana, while his decision-making in the final third was also excellent, with his precise passes supplying Scott Sinclair and James Forrest for goals on the night.
