Mark Cavendish was set to leave the Tour de France on a high this week to fully focus on his final Olympic preparations.

While Cavendish said he hoped to make it to Paris, he admitted after he won his fourth Tour stage of 2016 last Saturday that he wouldn’t push himself too hard. “If I’m on my hands and knees I have to stop, I can’t kill myself before the Olympics,” he said.

With four stage wins, one day in yellow and six days in the sprinter’s green jersey, the 2016 Tour was a return to form for Cavendish, and has shone a new light on his career following three lacklustre Tours measured by his own high standards.
