These Walls of Mine

Finding inspiration in the walls of his own house, Sarang Naik shoots a series of black and white abstract images of them.

The idea for this project came into being when I had to cancel a photography outing one day, because it was raining heavily. My usual reaction to this would have been to put away the camera. But since I hadn’t picked up the camera for several days, I was itching to shoot something interesting.

This reminded me of a quote by photographer Robert Adams where he says, “No place is boring if you’ve had a good night’s sleep and have a pocketful of unexposed film.” So I decided to challenge myself, and looked around my own house for inspiration. I was pleasantly surprised to find the abundance of things that I could shoot.

Black and white abstract photography has been a serious obsession of mine. It is a great tool for creative expression and a way to interact with my surroundings. The walls of my house proved to be a perfect subject for this aesthetic.

My Assignment

Description

An abstract study of textures and the play of light on the walls of my home.

Duration

The project is a culmination of several lazy afternoons spent at home, since April 2014. It is an ongoing series.

Notes

“There is nothing to photograph here,” is just another excuse. Look closer. There is always something to make pictures of.
