Blurring the BOUNDARIES

Welcoming the outdoors in and making your exterior an extension of your interior are concepts that have dominated local residential architecture for many years. While simply opening your glass doors can invite the beauty of the outdoors in, there are other ways you can achieve an effortless flow. We take a look at how flooring and greenery can help.

FLOORS THAT FLOW

Flooring plays a vital role in linking spaces and creating that smooth flow. FINfloor SA’s Shannon Tchetchik says: “If you want to create a sense of flow to the outdoors, you should extend the floor to the exterior, which draws the eye out and makes the area appear larger. Ensure that tiles used outside are suitable for use in any weather. Also, the grout should be the same colour for an uninterrupted look.”

Selecting from the same tile range or colour are also worthy of consideration, advises Italtile’s Nicole Russell.
