1 Replace the windows

If precious warmth is seeping out, your heating has to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature. Double- glazed windows are better than single, the gap between the panes acting as an insulating barrier. Secondary glazing is an affordable option to reduce energy costs, but double glazing can be the better investment as it is, on average, twice as effective. The lower the U-value, the better the energy efficiency. Secondary double glazing will have a U-value around 2.7W/m2 while a primary double glazed window with an air gap of 12mm will have one of 1.4W/m2.

2 Prevent leaks

You may not be able to see warmth escaping, but you can feel it if draughts are coming in through gaps and cracks. Covering doors and windows and fitting excluders are all quick and easy ways to counteract this.
