“Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder” Most of us have either heard or applied this popular proverb at some point in time. Like anything else in the world, when it comes to architecture and design too, what may be attractive to one may not be for another. Yet, despite the diversity of our desires and preferences, there are some structures that are usually liked by all. We all tend to be in awe of spaces that are surrounded by nature, with beautiful landscaping all around. The colour of the leaves, the ripples of the sea or the expanse of the sky… these can inspire anyone. In such cases therefore, the environs itself make a beautiful canvas for an architect to bring an abode to life. In contrast, we tend to cringe at the sight of homes located in congested areas or a suburban sprawl. Therefore, when an architect is roped in to build a home in a residential area that is cluttered with unimaginative, match box-like row houses, the challenge to create a space that ‘stands out’ is doubly difficult.
