Kia orana! That’s the Cook Islands way of saying warm greetings and bless you. Stepping off the plane after a six-hour direct flight from Sydney, I was welcomed by smiling locals, given a fragrant floral lei and a fresh coconut drink – what a change of scenery and I hadn’t even left the airport! Here the buildings are no taller than a coconut tree, and there isn’t a traffic light or McDonald’s in sight. It felt like I’d unearthed a secret gem and travelled back in time all in one.
