Max was a healthy young boy – until, on his ninth birthday, he contracted a virus that attacked his heart and caused it to fail.

After he was rushed to hospital, surgeons implanted a special device in Max’s chest to keep him alive, yet told his parents the only chance their son had of long-term survival was a heart transplant.
