The dust has barely settled on BBC1’s period version of The War of the Worlds, yet this week, another adaptation of HG Wells’ 1898 novel invades our screens. Although this is something entirely different…

Ambitious, big-scale and brought bang up-to-date, FOX’s eight-part adventure is set in modern-day Europe and features a large ensemble cast, including Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern.

Beginning with a double bill – followed by one episode a week – the drama introduces French scientist Catherine Durand (Léa Drucker), who detects a transmission from a distant star and believes it to be intelligent extraterrestrial life.

Soon after, a group of meteor-like objects hurtle towards Earth and emit powerful electromagnetic pulses that kill anyone who hasn’t been able to find shelter.
