Janelle Monáe from Hidden Figures on inspiring women, sisterhood, fashion and music.
-
Involved in the performing arts from a young age, Janelle Monáe founded her own record label the Wondaland Arts Society, releasing the EP ‘Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase).’ In 2010, Monáe released ‘ArchAndroid’, which earned her two Grammy nominations, including one for the hit single ‘Tightrope.’ In 2012, she became the face of CoverGirl and a spokesperson for the home audio company Sonos. She released the critically-acclaimed album, ‘The Electric Lady’ featuring artists including Prince and Miguel. Monáe went on to receive Billboard’s Rising Star Award. In 2014 Monáe was presented with the Jane Ortner Education Award from Michelle Obama and the Grammy Museum. The following year, Monáe announced her independent label, Wondaland Records. She began collaborating with Nile Rodgers on a new Chic album and with Duran Duran for the album ‘Paper Gods’. She is currently recording her third solo album. Hidden Figures marks her first major studio film role.
Looking beautiful (out of costume for her lunch break) wearing flared jeans, a white shirt and a black blazer, with a short, wavy ‘60s hairdo and bright red lipstick, Janelle Monáe sat down on the Atlanta set of Hidden Figures for the following interview.
How exciting was it landing the role of Mary Jackson?
