While The Durrell family are running wild in Corfu, some real animals had to be on their best behaviour.
Dramedy The Durrells (2016-current, season 1 is available from online streaming service Showmax from Monday 4 December) is based on naturalist Gerald Durrell’s charming autobiography My Family & Other Animals (1956) and sees an eccentric English family leave gloomy and drizzly Britain for the sun-dappled (and cheap) island of Corfu during the mid-1930s. From the moment they land, each family member goes galloping off in a different direction at a madcap pace. And in the case of youngest son Gerry (Milo Parker), the galloping might be literal as he reaches out to befriend a wide range of the local wildlife and farm life. For the series producers, that meant having a mini-menagerie on set – which is always a lot more fun for viewers than it is behind the scenes!
