Remembering Jed Allan

Daytime vet Jed Allan passed away on March 9 at the age of 84. “So sorry to post the very sad news of my father’s passing,” Allan’s youngest son, Rick, wrote on Facebook Saturday night. “He died peacefully and was surrounded by his family and loved so much by us and so many others.”

In 1964, the New York City native made his daytime debut on LOVE OF LIFE in the short-term role of Ace. “Ace used to beat up pregnant women, so they killed him off very quickly,” he recalled to Digest in 2005. Later that same year, he pulled double duty, playing Paul on THE SECRET STORM while appearing on Broadway in Barefoot in the Park. After exiting the show in 1965, he made his way to Los Angeles — and to prime-time, starring in 26 episodes of LASSIE as Scott Turner from 1968-70.

Allan then auditioned for the role of DAYS’s Doug, which went to Bill Hayes; three months later, he was brought in as Don Craig. That role lasted from 19711985 and earned him two Soapy Awards for Outstanding Actor (in 1978 and 1979).

A year after his DAYS departure, Allan was tapped to play SANTA BARBARA patriarch C.C. Capwell. “The most powerful character I played on daytime television. My favorite, without question,” he raved to Digest in 2005. He stayed with the show for the remainder of its run. A year after SB went off the air in 1993, he popped up on BEVERLY HILLS, 90210 as Steve’s father, Rush, a role he played on and off through 1999.

In 2 001, the actor’s wife of over 40 years, Toby, passed away unexpectedly; devastated by the loss, he reached out to PORT CHARLES’s executive producer, Julie Hanan Carruthers, in hopes of going back to work to fight his depression. She hired him to play celestial be ing Ed, and the job “saved me mentally,” Allan told Digest in 2005. In 2004, he moved over to GH as Edward, a role John Ingle had recently vacated. He remained until Ingle’s return in 2005. Allan is survived by his three sons, Mitch, 58, Dean, 55, and Rick, 52, and eight grandchildren.
