GENE-EDITING HOLDS HOPE FOR TYPE 1 DIABETES CURE

A LONG-AWAITED cure for type 1 diabetes is on the horizon — thanks to groundbreaking transplant therapy and geneediting, experts say.

In type 1 diabetes, the immune system turns against insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, stopping the body from making the vital blood sugar-regulating hormone.

Nearly 2 million Americans diagnosed with the life-threatening disease require daily doses of insulin — via injections or a pump — in addition to multiple fingers sticks every day to test blood glucose levels.
