An Open Letter To Sensitize The Issue Of Marital Rape

This letter is being written at the time the unacceptable issue of marital rape is becoming a serious threat to the concept of married life.

Needless to say, a considerable part of the Indian society is still unaware of the existence of this issue in society.

As an issue that concerns women most, it has been wrongly branded as a feminist issue - not only in India but also across the world.

Do you really think marital rape is a mere feminist issue and men have nothing to do with the issue? If you think so, you are still ill-informed.

Though women in all social classes are equally vulnerable to marital rape, those in the lower classes in the social strata are more vulnerable than the rest. Unfortunately, those in the lower classes in the social strata lack independent voice, as generally their households are controlled by men, who are breadwinners.

In another sense, it is improper to put a burden on men alone. This crime is too complicated. Definitely, lack of awareness is one of the prime reasons for the existence of marital rape. Even women are not correctly aware of this issue. Then, how are men supposed to be aware of?
