Intimate wear is an exciting business to be in right now. The vibrancy in the marketplace is palpable. This segment of the apparel industry is clocking unprecedented growth even as consumer tastes and preferences mature and veer toward fashionable products from the staple. Little wonder then, brands and retailers are clamouring for a bigger share of this Rs 25,034 crore pie, which according to analysts will grow to Rs. 60,277 crore by 2026. Naidu Hall, the manufacturing to-retail intimate apparel major in Chennai, is one such company that is well poised to significantly increase its share of this burgeoning market.
Naidu Hall is perhaps amongst the oldest intimate wear companies in India. It started operations way back in the 1930s when an aspiring entrepreneur, late M.G. Naidu, bought a hand-operated sewing machine by pawning a gold ring gifted to him and set out to develop a few blouse samples. This was a time when most women in his village did not wear blouses, let alone brassieres. He then developed the first bra, which his team of sales girls sold door-to-door. However, the prospective women consumers had to be educated and made aware of its virtues first. It took a while but this initial marketing campaign paid rich dividends. Naidu Hall was established in 1939 with its first outlet in Pondy Bazar, Chennai, selling blouses, petticoats and bras. The store exists to this day. Only that it has grown to occupy 5 floors.
Building on this rich legacy, Naidu Hall made rapid progress and grew from strength to strength. The Founder’s passion, grit and acumen that was so far-reaching in the earlier times, has been deeply ingrained in all the echelons of the company.
