Some of our horses have more “outfits” than we do. Alex Robinson checks out the options to keep your horse clean, dry and bite-free this summer

Summer wardrobe

IF you’re planning to have your horse in work during the summer – whether he’s a competitive athlete or glorious hack – you’re probably looking at a number of rugging possibilities. One minute our horses will be basking in glorious sunshine, the next they’ll be doused with heavy rainfall.

Nikita Norman from Derby House points out there are options, whatever the weather.

“There are some more versatile rugging solutions on the market these days which prevent the need to buy multiple rugs over the year,” says Nikita. “Hybrid rugs are useful in summer. Derby House’s Elite Storm Safe has mesh sides and a waterproof panel along the back, protecting from both flies and summer showers. The mesh fabric is breathable but thick enough to help keep your horse clean. Plus, there is no chance of the sun bleaching your horse’s coat.

“Perhaps consider a rug that is compatible with liners, so you can remove layers in summer and add them back when the weather turns cool. The Derby House Elite Lightweight turnout rug is waterproof, with liners available separately, saving you both money and space in the tack room.”

FOR those whose horses are turned out during summer, Rachel Bowles of Harry Hall advises watching the forecast. “Maybe turn out at night to avoid the heat of the day,” says Rachel. “Remember to check your horse for any signs of itching or rubbing at their rug as this could indicate they are too warm and need a lighter weight rug – or no rug. Some horses cope with the heat better than others.”

Flies are a typical summer nuisance, which is why Rachel suggests a waterproof fly rug, to deal with two potential issues without overheating the horse on a warm, wet day.
