When William van der Merwe pioneered industrial-scale wood recycling in South Africa, he solved several problems at once. With his 150-strong team and a fleet of powerful machines, he turns waste into a profit booster for farmers, and holds back the clock for municipalities faced with critically full landfills. He also helps preserve dam levels in a country running low on water.
Van der Merwe runs Africa Biomass Company (ABC), and was in 2017 named South African Entrepreneur of the Year.
