Roadholding And Handling
Farmer's Weekly
|May 24, 2019
Jake Venter explores the features that make a vehicle safe, comfortable and enjoyable to drive.
-
Motoring journalists tend either to rave about or condemn a particular model’s road holding and handling, but seldom explain what they mean. Roadholding refers to the way the tyres grip the road, but handling is a difficult concept to define or describe.
To an experienced driver, the difference between good and poor handling marks the difference between a car designed by automotive engineers who enjoy driving and one designed by marketers who regard it as an appliance, like a fridge.Handling refers to a car’s response to various road conditions such as a sudden change in road surface, a wheel locking during braking, or one end of the car breaking away during cornering.
